John Hayton

John Hayton was appointed counsellor (Education) and director of Australian Education International - North America at the Australian embassy in Washington, DC, in February 2007. John has responsibility for the bilateral education relationship with both the United States and Canada.

Prior to Hayton’s appointment, he directed the Americas, Europe and Multilateral Policy Section in the Australian Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. Hayton’s career includes 18 years with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, including postings in Bangkok and New York, and three years leading and implementing an information technology industry development program in Tasmania, Australia (2001-03).

When not at work, Hayton has been an active participant in community organizations, including most recently as presiding member of the Board of the Friends School in Hobart, Tasmania, and as a mentor to young men without significant male role models in their lives in Canberra, Australia.
